The Zambia National Education Coalition (ZANEC) would like to express its deep sorrow over the tragic rape and murder of a 16-year-old girl from Kamulanga secondary school who was found dead near a Police Post. This heinous act not only represents a profound violation of human rights but also poses a grave threat to the safety and well-being of our learners across the nation if perpetrators are not dealt with.
As an organization committed to advocating for quality and inclusive education, ZANEC believes that every child has the right to a safe learning environment. We therefore urge the Zambia Police Service to intensify investigations into this case, ensuring that justice is served swiftly and effectively. It is imperative that those responsible for this atrocity are held accountable to deter future incidents of violence against children.
Furthermore, we call upon the relevant authorities to implement robust mechanisms that prioritize the safety of learners in our schools and communities. These should include:
- Enhanced Security Measures: Schools should be equipped with adequate security personnel and surveillance systems to protect students from potential threats.
- Awareness and Education Programs: Initiatives aimed at educating students, parents, and teachers about safety protocols and reporting mechanisms are crucial in empowering the community to act against violence.
- Collaboration with Law Enforcement: Establishing partnerships between schools and local law enforcement can facilitate quicker responses to incidents and foster a culture of safety.
- Support Services for Victims: Providing psychological support and counselling for victims of violence will help in their recovery and reintegration into the school environment.
ZANEC believes that a sustainable and inclusive education system is one where every learner can thrive without fear. We encourage all stakeholders, including government, civil society organizations, and community members, to work collaboratively in safeguarding our children’s rights.
We stand ready to support any initiatives aimed at enhancing the safety of learners and urge the public to be more vigilant and proactive in protecting our children.
We take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family.
